The Site

Very close to the village of Thornbury and a stone’s throw from the critically acclaimed  Golf Club at Lora Bay, the Artisan development consists of extraordinary waterfront parcels hidden away on a forested slope extending along Georgian Bay. A new, gated roadway is cut into the hillside and secured with a large weathered steel retaining wall that extends 25 feet into the ground. Custom-designed, locally crafted lamps incorporated into the wall cast subtle pools of light on forest and water features along the drive.

The proposed Artisan helipad occupies the end of the drive and optional sauna/studios perch in the woods up above. Driveways at each residence abut in-building garages, and properties are cloaked from each other by thick stands of mature forest. 

 

Clad in glass and natural materials like locally sourced surface limestone, the Artisan residences are Energy Star-qualified buildings designed to interrupt the natural landscape as little as possible. Large decks soar out over Georgian Bay, 40 feet up in the air. 

 

This is precedent-setting architectural design. Artisan 1, now under construction includes huge glass, locally sourced, featuring several 24 x 5-foot panes in the master bedroom and a 37 x 14-foot glass wall fronting the staircase and elevator. Its sloped monopitch roof is clad in weathered steel and sports massive, dramatic 15-foot overhangs that offer solar protection and striking aesthetics. 

 

The Artisan’s architecture is designed to work with the natural topography of the land, blending into the surrounding hillside and preserving a sense of quiet, of seclusion, and of harmony with nature.
